Mother Says by Lizzy Hardingham
My mother sang us folk songs when we were young
Leant against the radiator
And I stood so small next to her guitar and I wanted to play like her
And when the time came that I was just big enough
She handed me my greatest source of love
My mother sang us folk songs with six strings and the truth
And something in me began to stir
I can’t remember learning to sing but I know I learnt it from her
She was always patient as she helped us to grow
And now she comes to almost every show
Now I play when I can’t find the words
One more song will make sense of the hurt
My mother sang us folk songs and taught us how to love
It took me time to understand
A song and a story might help you see yourself
And rearrange the life that you had planned
Loving is like music - it doesn’t care who plays
And my mother taught us it’ll be okay
